Viborg er en af de ældste byer i Danmark. Byen har 43.645 indbyggere (2025) og ligger centralt i Midtjylland ved Hærvejen. Byen er delt op af to søer, Søndersø og Nørresø. Byens navn, som gennem tiderne er skrevet som Wiborg, Wibjerg, Wibiærgh, Wybærgh, Wiburgh og på latin Wibergis, hentyder til et indviet sted til gudsdyrkelse og til byens beliggenhed højt i terrænet. Viborg betyder således "det hellige sted på bakken".
