Kránj je glavno mesto Gorenjske v Republiki Sloveniji, sedež Mestne občine Kranj in upravne enote ter Gorenjske statistične regije. Predstavlja gospodarsko, trgovsko, prometno, izobraževalno in kulturno središče Gorenjske. Z 38.000 prebivalci (2025) je skupaj s Celjem tretje do četrto največje slovensko mesto, v ožjem urbanem območju, ki zajema okoliške kraje, ima Kranj še okoli 10.000 prebivalcev več, širše somestje skupaj z nekaterimi sosednjimi občinami pa šteje skupaj med 80 in 100 tisoč ljudmi.
